Bone Age
May. 27th, 2004   3:52pm

I just had my daughter’s first bone age result back from Cornell. They did x-ray on her knee. She is 12 months old and her bone age reads 19 months.  She was born small, 18inches and 5.5lb. (She was born at 37 weeks).  Now her weight is around 30% and her height is around 50%. She was over suppressed in her first 3 months, under suppressed for a couple of months. Her level has been good for last 6 months. Her testosterone is < 3ng/dl, Androstenedione is < 10ng/dl.   I have several questions I would like to ask other parents. Please help !!

1. How reliable is the bone age for a child so young? Is the first scan more used as a baseline than a real read?

2. For other parents at Cornell,  is the x-ray read by the radiologist at Cornell? I know reading bone age is very subjective.  How good are the radiologists at Cornell? (Dr. New is moving today, I can not get touched with her.)

3. The fellow told me that it is considered "normal" for bone age within 1 year. But I am very concerned.  7 months might not seem significant, but given that she is only 1 yo, 7 months advance seems big to me.

Thanks.
