ToniHi Matt
Testicular ’tumours’ are quite common in adult males, especially if there has been undertreatment of CAH in the past, although these tumours are usually found to be adrenal rests (which was also true for the young man who wrote of his experience in the CARES newsletter). In most cases these ’tumours’ can be eliminated with a temporary higher dose of steroid and surgery is therefore unnecessary. Have they already tried this? It is only a very small minority that actually need surgery and it is very rare that it is found to be cancer. How experienced is the urologist you see as regards CAH? Does he know about the possibility of testicular adrenal rests? If not, then perhaps you should consider a second opinion before agreeing to surgery or at least ensure he does a bit more research. I am sure if you contact Kelly at CARES, she will be able to provide the necessary information and can help with a referral elsewhere - if need be.
