aimeeDear Anon,
I think she was trying to be nice by using the word disfigured. It sure beats the nurse that told me that "Ambiguous genitals look weird..." or the parent that let me know that someone born like me is "Ewww gross" I guess if I was born like them, I would think the same way. Maybe if more people were born looking like me then it wouldn’t be such a big deal.
There is a Twilight Zone episode where the surgeon with only his hands on camera takes the bandages of the patient to reveal a beautiful woman but you hear gasps of horror by the medical staff that is off camera then it’s panned back to show the beautiful woman by our social norms with the surgeon and medical staff looking at her in disgust because she doesn’t look like them and they are disfigured, weird, and gross looking by our social norms. I watched the Twilight Zone in reruns as a ten year old and I instinctively knew that particular episode related to the core basis of why I was being viewed, poked, and pictured by all those residents.
Take Care,
Aimee
