Hi Louise,

It sounds like (according to my ped endos instructions) you would have done what I would have done.

When Olivia was younger and had ear infections, I would stress dose for the fever, but  once it was gone (usually within 24 hours), I would go to regular dosing. This winter when she had strep throat and no fever (we caught it early since my other daughter had it the week before) we only did a double dose at 4 scheduled dosing times to help while the antibiotic was taking hold.

One thing you have to remember is that all of these emergency instructions are guidelines -- every child will respond to illness differently.

Our instructions are:

Fever 101 or greater (can be lesser depending on the child) -- triple dose when discovered, and then triple dose at regular med times until fever is gone (we give 3X a day)

Vomitting and no other symptoms -- wait 30 minutes (give the tummy a chance to calm down) and triple dose. If meds stay down, then everything is OK. If not, contact ped endo concerning an injection.

Vomitting and illness (e.g. running a fever) -- Contact ped endo and give an injection. Ped endo will help determine if trip to ER is also needed.

Broken bone -- give an injection, contact ped endo, go to ER

CAH and stress dosing & injections are very serious. From my perspective it is important to know your ped endo’s guidelines. When something happens that might require an injection, be in contact with your ped endo’s office to make sure you are doing what needs to be done. These are decisions that you don’t have to make by yourself.

Warm regards,

Janet
