Jemma,

Cody is 7yrs old SWCAH. This year at school he got knocked off the hanging bars and broke his wrist at the playground during recess. To make a long story short I got called about 25 mins. later!!!!!!!!!! Luckily I live 5 mins. from school.  I tripled his dose. I got Cody took him to the hospital( wasn’t sure it was broken) sure enough it was. The nurse gave him the injection and the next day we got the cast put on.  Cody did just fine. My endo says it is severe and should be given immediately. Even in the crisis guidelines it is to be given immediatley. Anyway I know each child is different in each situation so I just wanted to share our experience. But it worked out fine. It was almost an hour later.  Looking back I should of gave the injection as soon as I got to school!! We also had a problem when he got strep throat. School waited forever to call me and he had to have an injection. I had a meeting with the nurse, teachers and principal. Which I had done at the beginning of the school year. Sometimes I wonder if Cody should have a cell phone (some kids do believe it or not that have a disorder) Now they call me no matter what!!!!!!!!!!

His school nurse will give a stress dose if needed but not an injection. SOmething about the laws.  That’s why it is very important I feel that you talk with the emergency medical teams in your area about your child. Everyone in my area is  well aware of Cody’s situation and has a letter from his endo on instructions. I have taken Cody with me to meet them. They do not carry the solu-cortef kit (trying to make that standard just like insulin for the diabetics) with them. I think this is an issue we need to get in every state for it to be mandatory to carry the kit. If enough people lobby for this maybe it will happen. Just like the newborn screening!!! Just my thought on things.  Sorry so long.
