re: Leaving your CAH child with an older sibling

My oldest will turn 12 in August. Knowing what my wife and I have to face during an adrenal crisis, I wouldn’t feel safe leaving my kids alone.

If your daughter seems mature enough I would explain the process of an adrenal crisis, and then have several unscheduled adrenal crisis drills. Anticipate several ways adrenal crises proceed and see how she handles it. Start by telling her it’s an adrenal crisis drill and your son (make believe, for the drill) is throwing up -- what does she do?  I would even have one in which you try to apply as much emotional stress as possible -- start the drill by screaming, and continue to yell to elevate the pressure. In a real emergency there’s a lot of emotional stress, especially on a kid that young and you and she will want to know how sh’ll be able to handle it.

Anything less that that would be risking some serious consequences.
