MeganTanya,
At risk of stepping on your doctor’s toes, I’m somewhat mystified as to why he would say that your son is potentially a NCCAH. To my mind if he indeed does have CAH, he more likely could have the Classic SV (Simple Virilizing) form. There seems to be so much misapprehension that if someone is not a SW (Salt-waster) they are therefore a NC (Non-Classic)....but this is not true.
Classic Simple Virilizers usually manifest quite a lot earlier than Non-Classics and have only a very small amount of remaining enzyme activity (~2%).
The only real way of knowing for sure (whether it is SV or NC) is having a DNA mutation test done...however the degree to which hormone levels rise during testing above the acceptable level also gives some indication as to the severity.
It’s important to remember that CAH is not just a disease of potential mortality (SW) but also a disease of morbidity (ill health/diseased state- most CAH persons) - if left untreated or poorly treated. So prompt and efficient treatment for this condition is paramount.
