re: CAH males

I’m a soon-to-be 40 (gulp) adult male with CAH who suggests you take a deep, calming breath.  You’re obviously a good father because you are taking the time to research your son’s condition.  Continue gathering all the info from all the sources you can.

Now, here’s the good news -- particularly for males, CAH is a manageable disease.   There are heightened concerns with infection, illness, and stress, but with vigilance, your son can have a completely normal (whatever that is) childhood and entire life.

There will, of course, be issues along the way (as a young boy, I HATED taking my prednisone, but learned to finally accept it), your son will probably not reach the "full" expected height for males in your family (in my family, that means being 6’ tall instead of 6’4), mood swings CAN be dramatic when adrenals run low or high, and there is always the concern of adrenal crash, but again, these things are all manageable.

This board is a FANTASTIC source of support and information.  Post as often as you have a question.  There are many of us out there eager to help -- and share the information which was not available to my parents when I was a kid.

As for exercise, I agree with most of the parents on this board who don’t let their kids’ CAH get in the way of any activity the child wants to participate in.  As a parent, you will simply have to get used to fully communicating with coaches, babysitters, school nurses, and sometimes, even local doctors.  But it’s not that big a deal.

I will be happy to answer any other questions you may have.  Good luck, and know that you’ve got support when you need it --

Warm Regards, Eric
