re: CAH males

Bill,

I’m a 26 year old male with CAH.  I was diagnosed as a child.  Growing up, I had a fairly normal life outside my meds and so on.  I found that during my teen years, my depression ran a little rampant.  But, i made it through, i mean every teenager goes through it, it was just a little harder for me in my estimation.

I have recently started to do a lot of exercising.  The years of steroids I have already gone through and the current steroids I have been prescribed have led me to a lot of weight gain.  So I have tried to get really strict with my exercising, and eating habits.  The steroids have also already begun to dry out my joints and sometimes im a little tiny bit stiff, but these things are nothing i worry about or cant live with.  I take glucosamine and  find that the exercise helps a lot, so I would suggest that you try to instill a healthy lifestyle into him, including good eating habits and exercise/playtime, but that really isnt anything different from what any child should learn.

All in all, from my experiences growing up, dont baby him, just let him be a normal kid, but keep a silent watchful eye on him, just in case.  Also, be weary about some stress levels, dont protect him from all of it becuase he will still have to learn to deal with it, but you know...common sense.

My parents tried very hard to be sure I didnt feel different but at the same time they made sure I was aware of my CAH.

I hope this helps, Im not great at advice.
