Sherry - I can’t for the life of me figure out all this business about the concern of "offending" your mother-in-law. My Gosh, your child is your concern, not about offending a grown woman with important information. Follow your gut - not one of us knows your situation with your MIL, do what YOU feel is necessary. Offending my mother-in-law would be the last thing I would be concerning myself with. Follow your gut instinct no matter what anyone tells you!
