The Shot

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your child.  There are no words I could say that would comfort you through this time.

In honor of the loss of your child I do want to say that I am a huge advocate for giving the shot when in crisis OR even when in doubt.  There are NO DO OVERS when you are dealing with a child’s life.  What happened to you was a travesty of errors.  All of which Haley paid for dearly.  Your exhusband didn’t feel that he needed to give you money for the emergency shot ($40+/-) , the ambulance attendants didn’t treat Haley properly and, I am sure that the emergency staff’s ego made them wait for their own diagnosis before even trying to treat her.

This is my greatest fear.  My son has come so close to death on a couple of occassions but within minutes of giving him the shot he was restored back to a healthy active child (maybe a little hyper for a day).   There are NO DOWN SIDES to giving the shot.   The worst that came happen is your child has a little extra energy for a day or so due to the excess steroids.  We have seen the solu cortef bring him back from what we thought was certain death a couple of times and have sworn to inject well before he gets that bad ever again.

I had done an informal survey some years ago and it seems that the only difference between the children who survived an adrenal crisis and those who didn’t was that they received the shot.

Often times the ambulance attendants don’t carry the necessary meds on the ambulance and the ER staff don’t want to take the word of a parent and insist on running their own tests before doing anything.  By that point, it is too late.

In the name of Haley and all the other children who have lost their lives to this disorder, please keep the shot nearby at all times and don’t hesitate to use it if an adrenal crisis looks eminent.

My heart goes out to you and I will keep you and Haley in my prayers
