SherryYesterday my husband, our 16 month old SWCAH daughter and I attended a birthday/family bbq. The temp was about 82F but the heat index was listed at 102F. The family members home that it was hosted at didn’t have their air conditioning working so everyone just stayed outside. I was really concerned about my daughter, because of the heat. We attended for about 4.5 hours and by the time we’d left her little head was literally drenched with sweat, her hair was soaked!
Thankfully they had a nice fan blowing in the living room that I tried to frequently take her indoors to sit in front of for a few minutes to try and cool off. It was so hot everyone was sweating including me at 8 months pregnant! She didn’t drink too much water, and didn’t eat too much. (One of the habits I am trying to break her of, when she is around a lot of people she’s more concerned about other things then eating)
Even though we were in the shade the entire time, (thank god the yard is shadded by large trees) it was still hot! We live in Northern Virginia, and there is no such thing as a cool shady spot!
Is there anything I should have done to keep her cool? Just before we left my husband and I took her into the house and gave her a little table salt and water. What other precautions should we have taken? Should she even have been outside in heat like that? I was so worried she would have a crisis or something!
TIA!
