LauraHas your son experienced any snoring? That was our last straw. They never suggested Xraying her sinuses until then. The sinus problems they kept telling us were allergies, and kept giving us the nose sprays but didn’t want to give the good stuff with steriods because she was already on steriods. We had her tested for allergies because about two years ago she was rushed into the E.R. with a respiratory infection. They said it was a form of RSV. It is an infant virus BUT they said it can take a different form in older children and even adults. I was surprised. She was fighting what I thought was a really bad cold and cough and fever. By the early morning (like I always do) I was checking her fever and watching her breath. I noticed her ribs kept sucking in as if she was fighting to breath. Talk about panic. I woke my husband and we took her into the E.R. They kept telling me she was asthmatic. So after she was hospitalized for a day or two they sent us home with a nebulizer. (little machine that you hook up and take breathing meds. with) I thought they were insane, but took it anyway. Sure enough a couple of weeks later she got another cold and she almost had to be admitted again because she was wheezing. The breathing treatment helped in the ped. office. So cold after cold she continued to have these wheezing incidents. Finally two months later she was running in the yard and stopped and said she couldn’t breath. It was terrifying. She sat down and we calmed her and gave her a breathing treatment and she recovered. That is when my ped. referred me to a respiratory clinic at our Children’s Hospital. They tested her for asthma AND allergies then. They said she had mild to moderate asthma. They said the allergies were triggering the asthma. They put her on a maintenance plan. She took Advair Diskus twice a day. (an inhaled steriod) A year later we started to chase sinus infections after sinus infection. It was one fever after another. Then that is when she started the SNORING. Like I said it was as if someone pinched her nose closed in the middle of a deep sleep. That was my last straw. They sent us to an ear’s, nose, throat specialist and that is where she Xrayed and gave me the option to remove them. Best thing I ever did. Although she still has her allergies she doesn’t snore and knock on wood, has not had a sinus infection since!!!!! (I sound like an infommercial) Her asthma (knock on wood) also has been in good control since first diagnosed. I even drew her down to only one puff a day with her Advair. We just had her tested and she is doing great. To the point we may wein her all the way off by next summer. I feel it was asthma brought on by that nasty RSV she had in the hospital. SO if he is snoring, ask your ped. to refer you to a ears, nose, throat specialist. Most want to take out both adenoids AND tonsils. If your son doesn’t have any problems with strep in the past, I suggest you leave them. I heard those tonsils are rough to recover from. My daughter did not require a hospital stay because it was just her adenoids. I think if it is both they require a stay in the hospital. Her recovery was awesome. Good luck!!!
