My daughter has not had surgery and is doing great! She is 4 and just started preschool, which she absolutely loves! She is confident, outgoing, well coordinated and smart. She has an enlarged clitoris and fused inner labia. When she is standing you can see her clitoris but otherwise looks like a girl. She was spared wrinkled/darkened labia. This decision to have surgery or not was the most difficult I ever had to make. WE followed our hearts and we knew that she needed to make this decision as it is her body. She knows that she will need medically necessary surgery prepuberty (when studies have shown that the skin stays more supple and soft due to extra estrogen released during prepuberty. Some problems with early surgery can be stenosis requiring further surgery. We decided that her best odds of successful surgery was to wait. ((I am NOT suggesting that ALL early surgeries require further surgery, but this can and does happen.) My duaghter has asked why she and I look different and is very satisfied with "some girls have little clitorises and some have big clitorises". Also, my sister is a nurse for an OB/GYN and has seen many many women. SHe is the first to say that we come in all shapes and sizes even without a hormonal problem. Do lots of research. I have articles if you would like me to post them let me know. I, too agree that this is a very personal decision. I just wanted to let you know that there are many parents who have chosen to wait on cosmetic surgery and are happy with the decision. Take care, and remember to enjoy your beautiful baby! They are so precious! Julia
