To Anne and Aimee - Hurricane Frances

Concerned about the potential of Hurricane Frances.....Please check in with us when you can.  I have lots of family in the Melbourne area and they’re doing the best they can.  I’ve heard lots of crazy stuff (lines at the Home Depot that stretch to Canada).  Here are a few things I’ve either learned by experience or read on a news forum:

If you used a generator after Charley now is a good time to change the oil. Another tip I have read is that scoopable cat litter in a bucket makes a good toilet in a pinch, if there’s no water to be used for flushing. Also have on hand plenty of bug spray. If you plan on staying put, make sure you put on your shoes. As the storm approaches there may be glass broken and you don’t want a nasty cut requiring stitches. Also, you can’t stress the need to store water. A large clean thick contractor’s trash bag will hold up to 55 gallons of water. Fill several of them.

Make sure you find your house insurance policy! Put it inside of a ziplock bag and keep it with you at all times. If your area does get slammed, this is going to save you a lot of trouble. While you are at it, make sure you do the same with any other important papers. Titles for vehicles, vehicle insurance policies, birth certificates, and other items.

THIS PERSON GOT CREATIVE WHEN TRYING TO FIND LODGING INLAND:

I had no problem finding a cabin in a state park though. They had several available. Apparantly no one thought to try them. I don’t know how many state or national parks are in southern Florida, so it may not be an option; but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to mention it.

Again - pls check in when you can!  And Godspeed to you both..and your families!
