re: If you took Dex, what were the side effects?

I know of lots of Moms that took dex without many problems, but I seem to be the "poster child" for anything that could go wrong! Besides the rapid weight gain (mostly in the first trimester), heartburn, itchy skin and occasional sleeplessness, I had major problems with a compromised immune system, starting around the end of the second trimester (I did have to take it all through my pregnancy, because Dd is a SW). Basically, this meant that I couldn’t fight anything, and ended up with every infection you could imagine: countless bladder, throat, and sinus infections, even kidney stones and carpal tunnel syndrome (which my doctor said were possibly triggered by the extra hormones and drugs). I had such a massive inner ear infection when Dd was born, that I ended up with some permanent hearing loss in one ear and had to see a specialist for several months afterward (couldn’t even hear baby crying!).

That all said, I will say that I would do it again for Dd IN AN INSTANT!! The few months of discomfort were well worth it for me: Dd was born completely "normal" - no abnormalities of the labia, clitoris, urethra, etc. - so will not need surgery ever. She was also spared the "testosterone bath" in utero, with all of the effects that may or may not cause. I’ve actually never talked with anyone that had such an adverse reaction to the dex as I did, and chances are you will not need to take the dex beyond the first 16 weeks or so anyway (is that the right time for the amnio? It was so long ago, I forget!).

Good luck on baby #2! Keep us posted!

Blessings
