MicheleOur 3 children attend private school. Two have SWCAH. There is a nurse in the school from 10:00 to 2:00. When she is not there, the staff knows how to reach me ANYTIME!! I am never more than 10 minutes away from school so in a true emergency, if the nurse were not there, I would go and administer the shot. Our local EMS DOES NOT carry solu-cortef or any similar drug and they WILL NOT administer any medication which does not come off their ambulance .. NEVER. Therefore, I am always "on call". It’s fine though. I can tell you that I have comfort knowing we have an emergency plan in place, but in 9 years, neither of my kids have ever needed a shot at school. If they are sick, they are home. If they vomit, I have to get them and take them home. The only real variable is the unexpected injury and they have been minor. Yes, I have told the nurse on occasion to orally stress dose one of them until I get there, but that’s been the worst.
Do be sure to check on the policies of your EMS. I was schocked and disappointed to learn about ours. Also, my children do not take the bus. They are not permitted to carry their own meds and I certainly can’t put the bus driver in charge, so I drive them and I carry the emergency meds.
Best of luck.
