When I first found out I was pregnant my endo was very concerned with me taking dex due to the fact that I was diabetic. His main concern was being able to control my blood sugars because dex has a tendency to elevate the blood sugar. Which as you probably know poses a whole other set of risks for baby, not to mention mom. This is why my endo sent me to the University of Iowa Hospital for the chorionic villi sampling. This test allows you to not only find out the sex of baby but whether or not baby is affected, a carrier, or not affected at all by CAH.  As you know if you are carrying a boy there is no need for the dex and of course if you’re having a girl and she is not affected by CAH there would also not be a need for dex. I did stay in the hospital when they first started me on dex for one week so they could monitor my sugars. I don’t remember exactly how long it took to get the test results back but once I did get them I was able to stop taking dex because although I was having a girl she was just a carrier. I don’t think it took any longer than 3-4 weeks for the results if I can recall at all. I was also glad to know that my daughter is a carrier so when she is ready to become a mother she will have the information needed to prepare. She could have her husband go through genetic counseling to see if he is also a carrier and if they would run the risk of having a child with CAH. I wish you the best! You could always speak with your endo and see if they have any info they could give you on dex and diabetes or the chorionic villi sampling or any other alternatives.
