SandraHi Sara,
Congratulations on your new little boy!! I have 4 boys and my youngest two have CAH. They are now 3 yrs old and 10 mos. old.
I have a way to dose the cortef that I used with my 3 yr old when he was a month old (when he was diagnosed) and with the baby since he was 4 days old. I only had to use this until they were a few months old. Now I just pop the pill in their mouths and they chew it up or gum it up in the baby’s case.
When my first was very little, I tried the syringe but felt that I would worry about any remaining cortef in the syringe. I wanted something fast that wouldn’t turn into an ordeal, especially if I had to stick the syringe in his mouth twice (once for the meds and once for extra water to make sure they got all their meds). My dad came up with a great idea...use a plastic coated baby spoon (Gerber) put a drop of water on it and then drop the pill on the drop of water. In just a minute or less, the pill was dissolved, I just held the baby in one arm and then slipped the little spoon into his mouth and slid it out rubbing it on his upper lip as I pulled the spoon out. If he was sleeping, I would pull the bottom lip down a little bit and slip the spoon in and do the same thing when I pulled it out. It was easy, quick, I knew they got all the cortef because there was no residue on the spoon.
You have to try a few ways before you find one that is comfortable for you. Before you know it, you’ll be able to put it directly in his mouth.
Hope this helps! Let us know how you do and if you need more help.
