Elizabeth:

I am a labor and delivery nurse and can tell you the practice that we do at our hospital.   GBS+ mothers should be treated at least 2x with antibiotics before the birth of a baby vaginally.  (obviously not all the babies can wait for this:) and it is then that we need to monitor the babies more closely for any symptoms)  When having a c/s, babies don’t pass through the affected vagina and so are not at high risk.  The doctors at my hospital always administer one dose of antibiotics at the cord clamp during a c/s prophilacticly for the possibility of infection due to the C/S. this doesn’t reach the baby due to its birth.  Antibiotics are "Strong" medications for the veins so it is common for them to burn as they are being administered.  You can ask the nurse for an ice pack for the site of the iv --- it helps dull the burning pain or if it is ok with your doctor you could ask for the rate of the iv to be turned down so it is not running as fast into the vein.  Babies usually will show symptoms of Strep after 24 hours of birth.  This is the reason that at my hospital that all babies born to GBS+ mothers have to stay 24 hours in the hospital.  Your baby will automatically be in the hospital for 24 hours since you will have a C/S.  Most hospitals will keep mothers of C/S  3 nights.   Hope this helps!  Good Luck and Congratulations!!
