re: thoughts on the carrier article

I was curious about the same thing.  My husband’s sister was also diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and depression is rather common in our family.  Also, other physical symptoms of CAH are represented in what I now consider "probably carriers" after reading that article.  For instance, my sister and brother have debilitating migraines during times of stress.  When they are healthy they are really healthy but when they get sick, they are knocked out for the count for days.  Dehydration and depression come with sickness with them most of the time.  They both have excess hair as well as other symptoms and my sister’s medical charts from when she was little and going to Bethesda Naval Hospital, it shows they suspected she might have 3 beta because she didn’t show the signs of 21 hydro on a consistent basis.  3 beta, from what I understand can be sort of like having a "maybe I will work today, maybe I won’t" system.  However, if carriers can show symptoms and, depending upon the mutation, might show more or less, I see it as being very interesting indeed and would wonder whether those showing symptoms should be tested during physiological stress times instead of during a regular day and perhaps be prescribed what CAH patients take when they feel the symptoms coming in.  It will be interesting to see what and if there is a follow up article on how it could be combatted.  To be honest, I found the article a little hard to understand upon my first couple of readings because of technical items as well as I kept getting messed up with the fact that people involved with CAH were eliminated from the study because of psychological problems that already existed.  It sounded to me like that alone should have keyed people in and should have made someone want to do a study on something too coincidental not to be connected.

I feel for you and your family in all regards to depression.  I doubt that any IQ cahllenges are due to being a carrier, however,  because I have seen mostly the opposite effect in CAH and any carrier I know.  You can tell that by the thoughtfullness and intellegence of most of those posting on this board alone.  They are obviously carriers and/or have CAH and appear mostly above average :)

I’m glad you brought it up and felt comfortable enough to share.  It would be interesting to see if we could get a list going of people on here who might have ever thought that something they deal with might be a "carrier symptom" and see if there are commonalities amongst us.  Just as a unscientific poll. Maybe someone will do it sometime.

Take care and God bless,
