JuliaRisty,
Your post was a bit offensive simply because it shows your ignorance of the disease of depression. One who has true clinically diagnosed depression cannot simply say "ok, I won’t be depressed today" and it will miraculously go away. I am happy that you and those around you do not to your knowledge suffer from depression. That is a really good thing. I personally have had a different experience and know from personal experience that depression is not a state of mind, but a disease. Prozac is way overprescribed and handed out like candy to anyone having a bad day, I know this is true. BUT there are people, lots of people, who need to have seratonin levels medicinally corrected. Your post was your opinion, I understand that. But please educate yourself about the disease before you label it simply a state of mind. People may have been offended and frightened off by your post. I have dealt with depression for so long that people that have your opinion of the disease no longer truly offend me. I also suffer from Fibromyalgia and am sick to death of people who think that’s all in my mind too. Trust me and my pain that it is not. When people label other people’s diseases they minimize that persons experience. Just because I don’t have a big swollen head doesn’t mean there is nothing wrong with what’s inside it. Just because you can’t see the muscles and tendons in my body throbbing does not mean there is no pain.
I would think that people on this board in particular would be more educated and accepting of a disease such as depression. After all our CAH children do not walk around with their adrenal glands hanging out for all the world to know there is something wrong with them.
Sorry if this post offended anyone, but maybe we should have put this discussion on the controversy page because minimizing anyones pain is not a good thing.
