re: newborn treatment

I have 4 boys. My youngest two have CAH. With our 4th CAH boy we also did a CVS and found out that he did have CAH.   He was born without any complications or problems. We went ahead and saw the endo after we were discharged. He was about 4 days old and we went ahead and started the cortef. My 3rd CAH son was diangnosed through newborn screening. He didn’t start treatment until he was 30 days old. We went ahead, rather than waiting to see if he had problems, and started him on his meds. His initial 17ohps came back lower than my 3rd son’s had but then even after the treatment started they started going higher. The funny thing (well, not really funny...but he passed his newborn screen)  We raised the meds for a while and now we are back down to 3.75 mg cortef per day. He is doing great. I didn’t have to worry about him going into crisis and it made me much more able to enjoy those precious few newborn weeks. He is now almost 11months and it’s gone by to fast.

They didn’t take any other precautions at the hospital other than check his blood sugar etc...which was always fine.  I would say relax, take him to the endo after you are discharged and go from there.

Good luck,

Sandra
