hormones and sleep
Nov. 6th, 2004   9:14pm

Over the years I have read many, many references to the timing of cortisol production, body temp, growth hormone production and sleep. Given the sleep patterns of my 6 yr old (with CAH SW) I am convinced there is a connection.  Although I guess my beliefs don’t really change our lives much. He still needs to learn to sleep at night.

I also read several times that growth hormone is secreted at night when the cortisol levels are lowest. This struck a cord with me since so many with CAH struggle with height even when well controlled. I wonder if it doesn’t have something to do with too much cortisol remaining at night and disturbing g.h. secretion.

Whenever my son has had a big dose of Cortef at night he has had major sleep issues. We switched to circadian rythmn dosing a couple of years ago and it worked wonders for his sleep (not to mention his weight)

We just switched to dex this last week. We’ll see how this affects his sleep.
