Danny CarltonI was prescribed prednisone awhile back and the two things I noticed it did were to make me constantly annoyed, and constantly hungry. (Remember I don’t have CAH, I have two kids with it) The prescription was for inflammation. From what little bit I experienced I cannot imagine anyone not gaining weight if the prednison is too much. No matter what I ate I was still hungry. It was an unending munchies. It wasn’t until the third day on it that I remembered that what I was taking was the same basic chemical as the Cortef my kids take. I did an internet search and found it was not supposed to be taken with another medicine I take, and the doctor had me go off of it.
Whether the prednisone itself is causing the weight gain or it causes such a constant hunger that you eat without comprehending you’re eating that much -- the result is still the same: uncontrollable weight gain. Telling someone whose prednisone prescription is too high that their weight gain is their fault is pretty stupid, but that’s what you get from some doctors.
Being from the US I don’t fully understand the medical system in GB. Are you not able to get a second opinion that easily? I know you guys are under socialized medicine, but the boundaries and limits of that aren’t all that clear to us Yanks.
You should also remember that there are two main side affects of that type of hormone -- weight gain and moodiness. The second can easily produce depression. It sounds like you need to address both problems as possibly the result of over dosage of the prednisone.
