SueMy son is almost 17 and just through puberty. Weight was becomming a bit of a problem around the age of 7-10 years but I feel this was due to overtreatment and as he went through puberty, his weight couldn’t keep up with the dramatic increase in height, so he ended up slightly underweight (according to the charts!). He is on a very low dose of hydrocortisone now though (12mg/m2/24hrs) and this seems to suit him as he remains very healthy, bloods are within acceptable limits and he can eat what he likes without putting on weight (and believe me he has a very healthy appetite!). Obviously genetic disposition does play a part though - we are all relatively slim and would therefore expect my son to follow suit.
I do think quite a few kids are overtreated in childhood, which is why so many suffer from weight problems, which sets a precedent for later life and of course they also don’t achieve their full height potential as a consequence. Better treatment and monitoring for all patients is needed!!!
