RebeccaMHello,
First, let me thank you for what you are doing for this country as well as the rest of the world.
Secondly, let me tell you that your wife is a strong woman to be able to deal with this stage of CAH on top of you being gone and I appreciate her strength.
Seizures and adrenal crises can cause death, yes. I am curious to know what lead up to these things, though and if there were signs of it coming (that you can recall) that you can make a mental note of for future reference. Our 2 1/2 yr old sw daughter has been on iv drips a couple of times and we were blessed to have that remedy her situations at the the time. The second time wasn’t as bad as the first because we recalled what she looked like/acted like prior to the first one so our actions were a bit more calm and calculated. Like Michelle, we have a glucose monitor and swear by it when our daughter gets sick. The last time our daughter threw up we checked the monitor, saw how low she was and were able to see that she was low but not so low as to be taken to the hospital. We gave her some flavored gatorade (sugar and electrolytes) at 5 minute intervals (to not overwhelm her and make her throw up again) until we brought it slowly back up and that combined with an increase in meds kept her out of the hospital.
The reason I say that is yes, you can die. Yes, it is scary and should be taken extremely seriously, but at the same time the more you learn about CAH and your ability to read your child for clues, I believe there is actually a level you come to where it becomes second nature to grab the thermometer, grab the glucose monitor, grab some salty snacks, grab the shot, etc. because you know where your own child is headed and at what stage they are at. After all this time, I have finally gotten to really know my daughter enough to see her clues.
Its hard but gets a bit easier with time and experience. Its ike the shot. Several people I have read on here don’t want to give it the first time but then after they gave it, and their child perked up quickly, they wondered what they had worried about and would give it again quicker the next time.
If you are wondering about endos, would you mind telling us where you are stationed here in US. People on here might be able to point you to an endo in your area that they really like.
Take Care and thanks again to you and your wife! God Bless your little boy, he is obviously quite strong like his dad!
