SandraHi Mom of 4,
I am also a mom of 4(boys 10,6,3,1). The youngest two have CAH. When my now 3 year old started his meds at one month old, I tried everything. He would spit it out in a syringe and I found that some was left in the syringe. It was a pain to add more water etc... Then I tried crushing the pill in a spoon and adding water but I had used a big spoon and crushing it was sometimes inconvenient to do. Then my dad had an idea. Use a Gerber soft spoon or another small spoon. Put the pill in it and then a drop of water. You can put cortef and florinef in it together. In a minute it’s dissolved. I would hold the baby in my arms, open his bottom lip with the tip of the spoon and push it in his mouth. When you pull the spoon wipe it on his lip and it’s clean! It was so easy I couldn’t believe I hadn’t done this before. I had so many coated spoons it was funny!!
We then switched to liquid Cortef briefly. I didn’t like the inconvenience of it. We always had ball games etc.. to go to and someone would always ask, "Oh, is he sick." After he was a little bit older, I just started putting the pill in his mouth and he did fine. My baby with CAH got the benefit of my experiments. He is now 1yr old and takes the pills in his mouth without a problem. I did use my spoon method until he was 3 or 4 months old.
I wish I could help you with the salt. My 1st with CAH had to take salt supplements but it was brief. He hated it. He was exclusively breast fed and didn’t like bottles. On top of that every time he got any salt he looked like a slug that was fizzing away. It was terrible. Finally the doctor told us to just stop after a few days. With my youngest CAH son we didn’t even try the salt.
Good luck and believe me it does get easier all the way around!!!!
