Up most of the night with sick kid.

Ginny started complaining of stomach pains right about bed time. With her it’s hard to tell because she complains of her stomach hurting anytime she doesn’t want to do something. This time she provided more evidence by spewing her dinner across the living room carpet. We waited a half and hour with no repeat of the vomiting and gave her a double dose of cortef. But she almost immediately threw it up along with whatever was left in her stomach. We gave her a phenergan suppository and waited another half an hour then another double dose. She threw it up almost immediately. Through this all she never had a temperature and acted very lucent, although tired, since it was way past her bedtime by then.

We called the doctors office and Dana Greer, the nurse practitioner was on duty. She OK’d the shot, so we gave Ginny 1 cc (which is twice her normal shot), but she threw up almost immediately after we gave her the shot. Thinking the shot didn;t have enough time to work, we waited, well I waited, while Linda went to bed.

She seemed to have calmed down, but then about half an hour after giving her the shot she threw up again, well, more like dry heaves since there was nothing left to throw up. We called Dana again, and she said that if she’s still throwing up in four hours give her another phenergan suppository.

Usually we would have already been on our way to the emergency room, but Ginny stayed pretty clear headed through it all and never had a temperature. It seems as if once we got the hormone to the level a non-CAH child’s would be, there was still the virus to deal with, which is what was happening. It’s kind of unnerving since it seems there’s such a balance between simply dealing with a virus and an actual adrenal crisis. So far she still seems fine, other than throwing up if she eats or drinks anything other than her medicine. She thirsty, but not dehydrated. Mostly, right now she’s bored and hungry, too. It’s just a waiting game to let her body clear out the virus.

I finally got to bed (well the couch in the living room next to where we parked ginny) at about 1:30 am, but had to get up at 3:30am to get Linda’s breakfast ready for her to leave for work at 5am. (She decided about 4:30am to go ahead and take a half day emergency vacation, and slept most of the morning.) I’m not that tired for getting so little sleep, but I’m sure it’ll hit me before long.
