Not only is EMLA good for blood draws, it is great for giving shots like Lupron.  We used to use EMLA prior to giving my daughter her monthly Lupron injection.  It worked so well, that we started using the EMLA about 30 min - 1 hr before bedtime, she would go to sleep, and we would give the shot in her sleep.  She would not wake up.
