After reading a post here a few years ago about Wendy-lee’s daughter that has SWCAH, and had a stomach bug that caused her some throwing up. Wendy-Lee help me tell the story better. From what I can remember, she gave the solu-cortef shot but was still in the E.R. with a dangerously low sugar level by morning. So after that I asked my pediatrician if it would be a good idea to get a meter. She said if it gave me peace of mind she would prescribe me one and it wouldn’t be such a bad idea. I never got one because it was the end of the flu/cold season and I told myself I would and truly never did because my insurance didn’t cover it. I have discussed this with our ped. endo. in great length. He said if she vomits and cannot hold down an oral stress dose, inject her and bring her in for some fluids no matter what. (the fluids that has the glucose in it) We also try and make sure she has some form of sugar when she is going through a stomach virus. Like a popscicle or one of those awful tasting popscicles that are the Pedialite brand. Whatever the case is, since that post I always make sure some kind of sugar is in her system. Even if she barfs, and holds down the stress dose. I wait for a while and give her a bit of sugar in some form. That was a good lesson taken from this board for me personally. Thanks Wendy-Lee! So my advice is to get one if you can. Peace of mind goes a long way. This will help you feel more control of the situation too. And that can mean a whole heck of a lot when you are dealing head on with these nasty viruses. My dad is diabetic and we always test our sugar for "fun"when he is here. I know how strange are we? He has one that barley hurts you. I know they make them out there. Doesn’t B.B. King sing about the diabetic blues on that commercial? That is the kind to get. Good luck!Laura
