My wife and I have used this method in the past.  When my now 14 year SWCAH boy had his first seizure our endo provided us with the meter.  He said that he had this seizure due to low blood sugar.  We were to watch his sugar levels until he was over the illness.  Now when our boys get ill we make sure they have sugar in their system.  If they are vomiting, we have found 7up to be the best thing for them.  It is easy on the stomach and has the sugar they need.
