re: re: Glucose testing during an illness?

Dana,

Both of my daughters have sswcah (7 & 8 years old).  When they are ill enough to be taken in for fluids to the ER, they are usually hypoglycemic.  We carry glucose tablets in our medical bag.  I keep thinking I need to get the glucometer that we discussed with the endo but don’t for whatever reason.  When they are ill, we encourage them to drink sprite or 7 up because it has some electrolyte qualities and for the sugar.  It also helps to settle the tummy.  Our endo has a form that he typed to add to our emergency letter (for when we fly on airplanes) and this is what is says

"Hypoglycemic reactions (low blood glucoses) is also a possibility, requiring treatment with glucose tablets or acceptable substitutes.  Equipment necessary to test blood glucose levels is sometimes needed.  These supplies include:  a blood glucose monitor, test strips, lancets, syringes, epinephrine, cortisol and/or a Glucagon Emergency Kit.  The supplies need to be carried with the patient or patient’s guardians."

No one wants to poke these poor babies more than need be but sometimes it’s necessary to save them from permanent damage or death.  Now that you got me thinking about it again, I think I’ll give the endo a call about it.  We have soooo many illnesses and mutated flu bugs going around right now that they are actually cancelling schools due to illness.  I’m saying a prayer and crossing my fingers that we all stay healthy!  :)

Blessings,

Tonia
