Carrie is right. They really don’t like to take out tonsils if there has not been a history of strep throat. Knock on wood we never had it. When you take your child to a nose, throat, ear specialist they will Xray his sinus cavity. They will determine how large the adenoids are and if they should be removed. It was horrible to watch my daughter sleep. Notice how I said watch because we sure weren’t sleeping. I would have to go in and see what was going on because I could her her toss and turn and snort and gag and sit up and fall over. It was horrific. We talked at the pediatrician office how this now passed the normal snoring. This was now hampering her much needed sleep to keep her healthy. That is when we were referred to a Ear Nose and throat specialist. The proceedure is done as an in and out patient surgery. Our E.N.andT. specialist said if it the tonisils were an issue she may have opted to keep her over night just for an extra precaution. But the tonils were never an issue. And like you, I too was concerned about having to do it all over again but I felt good about the doc.s reasoning and the fact she never had strep throat problems. She didn’t even need the pain meds. they sent us home with. She did throw up once we got home from that gunk but she was so stressed dosed from the surgery, and we had already continued the stress dose for the next 24 hours she didn’t skip a beat. She threw up what the body needed to get rid of the gunk she swallowed, and the anethestic, and she smiled and asked for pizza. I found out that a person looses their adenoids as they grow into an adult. They shrink. My daughter has allergies so that irritated them and so they swelled. Knock on wood again, I swear she has caught less crap since they were removed. No more sinus infections in which she got constantly. I friend of mine had her two girls in for the removal of adenoids too and she said the same thing. She swears they are healthier. Good luck I hope this helps.
