Being a P. E. teacher in middle school and having CAH, not SW though. I have seen many excuses come from this age group, so they don’t have to participate. Sounds like she is avoiding her responsibilities, and everyone is letting her. I agree with Martha and she needs to be held accountable. That is the problem nowadays, kids are not being held accountable for their actions, grades etc. She should be able to monitor her situation, bring gatorade etc.

She may be embarrased about dressing down. We have a policy at our school that bathrooms are used to go to the bathroom and not change in UNLESS they have a medical excuse. If this is the reason, she needs to dialogue this with the appropriate person along with her parents, to the nurse, counselor and principal, and P.E. teacher so they are all on the same page. A contract should be drawn up between her and all her teachers to make her accountable. (ie. what circumstances would warrant her to go to the nurse.)

They are many things she could still do in P.E. I have a CAH boy in my class who participates in every activity including running the mile during fitness testing.

She may need a psychologist but sounds like she is just ditching her responsibilities and using CAH as her weapon of choice because it is the most convenient for her. Maybe I’m sounding too tough but, I’ve worked with middle school kids for 5 years now and they are a lot different than when I was in middle school in the late 70’s. Accountability, accountability, accountability!
