The neonatologist started with just trying to treat his hypoglycemia when Garrett was first born. They took three tests, Cortisol, Insulin and Growth Hormone after his hypoglycemia did not go away after 7 days. While we were waiting for these tests to come back, they put him on Diazoxide because they assumed his insulin was too high which was making his sugar low. Needless to say, all three came back "normal", but his Cortisol level was on the low side. They took him off the Diazoxide and his sugars were great, but then the Endo said his Cortisol levels were low compared to his growth hormone levels and that is when thye brought up CAH. They took the 17 OHP and then put him on the Cortef a couple of days later. His 17 OHP came back negative, but his sugars are still kinda iffy. I don’t think they are diagnosing him mainly on his low sugars, but are trying to pinpoint the reason for the low sugars. It is quite a roller coaster. Even though his 17 OHP came back normal and the nurse in the endo office told us he doesn’t have it, he just has an adrenal insufficiency, I am going to put the word out about CAH. Our state has newborn screening (his hasn’t come back yet), but I will do whatever I can to make sure that every state has screening. You ladies are all so courageous and your children are lucky to have mothers like all of you.
