re: daycare for CAH kids

Dear Jen,

I am in a very similary situation; my daughter is 18 months, and we plan to send her to "kindergarten" next year, and I absolutely understand your fears - I feel very much the same.

I plan to briefly explain her condition with those who take care of her, and just ask them to give her the noon medicines.

In Hungary, where we live the parents are not teached at all how to shot the children in case of emergency. What’s more, when I asked our endo about it; she told me, that it is absolutely unnecessary, because even when she goes to crisis, she will be able to swallow some Cortef. When I told her how surprised I am to hear this, and mentioned that in the US every CAH parent is trained how to give the shot, she just answered me, that it is because of the large distances, that it takes a long time to take the patients in to the hospital!!!!!! I think it is amazing, so still, I will ask our doctor to give a recepie on IV Hydrocortisone, and I will learn how to give the shot!

Sorry for being off, but I think that a "normal" baby sitter (I mean someone without medical bacground) will not be able to provide first aid in case of an adrenal crisis; so the best thing is to avoid situations when your child is with someone who is not familiar with CAH. So, if my daughter is sick I will keep her at home, and if she is getting sick in the kindergarten, I will go to pick her up as soon as possible.

Do you plan to tell something about her virilisaton to her caregiver?

Kind regards,

Tami
