My 8 year old SWCAH son played tackle football last fall.  Practice started in August.  He did just fine.  I always made sure we brought a large water bottle with Gaterade in it as well as one with just plain old water in it.  On real hot days the coaches made sure they took regular water breaks.  My husband or I were always there for every practice and game and one of the cheerleading coaches was an EMS employee and was aware of Jack’s medical situation.  She was also at every practice and game.  He played on offense and defense and never had any injuries (thank goodness).  I’m not going to lie to you, I was very hesitant to let him play.  Not so much from the injury part (he’s a big kid) but from  playing in the hot weather with all that equipment.  All in all it was a great experience.  He also plays hockey and baseball.  Your son sounds very active like mine and I think sports is a great outlet for them.
