KrisMy daughter is almost 20 years old. She had a fused labia enlarged clitoris and her vagina was not completely separate from her urethra. She had her first surgery at 11 months old to reduce the clitoris and the second surgery when she was five to correct the vagina urethra fusion. She has never questioned our decision to have the procedures done or stated that we should have waited. My (our) reasoning for having done it done at an early age was she would forget surgery and she would never have to deal with being ’different’ than the other girls.
If you ask her now what she remembers about her surgery -- she will tell you about the hospital’s kid show and how they (hospital staff) picked her stuffed bear to be a part of it. We have always been matter of fact about her condition and very open with her that we made the decisions regarding her health with the information we had available at the time and always with her best interests in mind. She has never questioned the decisions we have made regarding her CAH or surgeries. I have never questioned or regretted my decision to have these surgeries performed at an early age, but you must do what you are comfortable with.
