re: fetal testing and dex

I originally opted not to take Dex with my second pregnancy.  The reason being that my sons’s Endo feels that the chances of having a girl with CAH is 1 in 8.  She is concerned about the long term effects of taking Dex, stating that there is too little research to know any bad effects.  As you probably have already correctly assumed, she is not a big fan of taking the Dex and really tried to discourage me.

However, at eight weeks I was shocked to learn that I was not expected one baby, but two!  That instantly caused me to re-evaluate not taking the Dex.  I became extremely concerned about having two girls, one with and one without CAH.  I had to make a quick decision since the window of opportunity was closing.  But, I did then change my mind and went on the Dex.

I had an amnio and learned that my daughter did not have CAH, but my son did.  I would highly recommend either the CVS or amnio.   The reason being that with the second pregnancy they did check for CAH through the newborn screening panel.  And guess what?  My son came back negative for CAH!  Granted we still went ahead with the 17OHP testing, but those results take close to two weeks to receive.  It still gives me chills to think what could of happened hadn’t I had those amnio results.

As a final thought, I would like to also add that I did not having any of the nasty side effects of the Dex.  My weight, bp, etc. were all excellent throughout the pregnancy.

Good luck with your decision.  I know it is not easy!
