re: fetal testing and dex

Hi Martha,

I did take the dex with my 4th pregnancy. My third son has CAH.  I decided to take it because I think the dex has been used just about as long as some of the antibiotics I give my kids.  I think if you are on the right dose and monitored it’s ok.   I also had a CVS done at about 10 weeks and it showed to be a boy so I stopped the dex then.  Total time on was about 6 weeks.  I  did gain more weight but then I could have chosen not to eat cookies and ice cream...LOL!!! I did feel great though. I even started to wonder if I need to be treated! I did have severe migraines after stopping cold turkey. I never before had migraines and it took about 1 month to go away. I haven’t had one since. I also had terrible anxiety and moody but I was also pregnant and had just been told that my son did have CAH so....I think it was  combo.

It’s a personal decision to take or not to take the dex.  My doctors didn’t try to convince either way. I told them I wanted it and they said OK.  I guess  you have to ask yourself, if the baby is a girl and does have virilization, how would you feel?  Even if you take the dex there is still a chance that she may have some virilization. I’ts not 100% that she won’t even with the dex.

If I had to do it all over again, I would. I am not having any more kids since 4 boys is plenty! But, if I were...I wouldn’t think twice.  My now 1 1/2 yr old is doing great and is quite a little monkey!! He climbs on anything he can!!! They are truly a blessing!!!

Good luck to you,

Sandra
