Julia in CTLisa,
That is just plain unacceptable! The fact that the doctor said those things in front of an impressionable 10 year old girl is unfathomable! Our girls have such issues with weight as it is that I cannot imagine a doctor doing this. Your post has me so upset!
As for Ashley’s weight, 90 pounds is NOT FAT! Chelsea weighs about 94 pounds and is a year younger. From the sounds of what you are doing, Ashley gets plenty of excersize and is eating a healthy diet.
Please try sitting down with Ashley and tell her about nutrition and the NEW food pyramid http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/pyramids.html If you can, sit down with a nutritionist, especially one you can find that will take the time to do a preliminary health form and will have researched CAH by the time you meet. Ours was great, she had a print out from this site when we went to meet with her :)
Make sure Ashley knows that the actresses she sees on TV, movies and magazines are MALNURISHED or AIRBRUSHED! Make sure she understands that CAH kids need proper nutrition as much as they need their meds!
Our endo said the same thing to me about Chelsea, and I knew in my heart that he was wrong. We parents DO KNOW BETTER than they do in a lot of cases! We see our kids sweat and struggle daily, they don’t. We see what our kids actually eat, they don’t, and they tend to think people LIE about what they are feeding their kids!
9, 10, 11 year old girls are sooooo sensitive to this issue that only positive things should be said to them in concern of their weight and eating habits. The next time this topic comes up with your endo, PLEASE do not let him discuss it in front of Ashley. Our kids take what these doctors say to heart way too much and don’t have the reasoning ability that adults do. They can’t put what the doctor said out of their heads and just know they are doing things right, and they are beautiful just the way they are. CAH is enough of a struggle without this issue being lumped on our growing girls!
I will be praying for you and Ashley that she might come to love her body just as it is and be able to nourish it without feeling worried about being "fat".
Good luck and feel free to email me if you wish.
