re: Could prenatal treatment possibly have reverse affect on healthy babies?

Risty,

I think that is a very good question and one I’ve also wondered about myself.  The answer I received is that this should not happen because male genital development is largely dependent on the testerone produced in the testicles, which should be unaffected by prenatal dex treatment.

At the same time, there was a mother who posted here once whose non-CAH boy (exposed to dex treatment) was born with hypospadias (a condition in which the opening of the penis is at the base, rather than at the tip, of the phallus).   Hypospadias can be seen in boys who are undervirilized.  In this case, the doctors thought the hypospadias might have been as a result of the dex treatment.

I don’t know what the conclusion of her story was...I am sure it would have been difficult to prove on way or the other exactly what caused the hypospadias.     But, I think it is always good to keep in mind that ALL experimental treatments carry an element of risk.  And in many cases, the risks may be not be completely known, when treatment is initiated.
