Julia in CTHi Sue and Neil,
Chelsea is 9 and has been on depot-lupron for 13 months. She does struggle with weight issues, but we have been able to somewhat control them with diet and exercise. She swims 4 days a week, sometimes more. The shots do hurt A LOT, so please prepare your daughter for that. Chelsea is sore in the area for about a day or so after the shot. Also, we have found it best for her to NOT see the shot...they are very intimidating looking.
We have found that the shot does not stop all symptoms of puberty. She still struggles with acne, especially on the forehead area. She also exhibits signs of PMS in the days before she gets the shot...our Endo says he’s never heard of such a thing, but I’m here to tell you that I have a kid that swings from crying to grumping at a fever pitch for about 3 days before the shot.
We are trying to buy her some height as well as stop the puberty until a more appropriate time with the shots. Chelsea’s growth plates are almost closed and we have slowed her growth considerably with the shots.
If you have other questions that I might help you with, please feel free to email me.
Best of luck,
