LynnTI found out through trial and error that I am better off (at this time) driving my son to the hospital myself when he goes into an adrenal crisis.
Some of the reasons are that the entire Ambulance Service are volunteers and can not even hang a bag of fluids or give him an injection if I hand it to them. They also have to take him to different hospitals than the one that has all of his records.
The only thing that happens when I call 911 is that I end up waiting 10 - 15 minutes for the ambulance to show up while I could have already been 10 -15 minutes into the trip to the hospital.
One time when I was driving my son to the hospital I called 911 from the car. They had to transfer me 4 times in order to connect me to the town that I was driving through. Finally, I told them that I had already arrived at the hospital and didn’t need them anymore.
Currently, I am applying as a volunteer with the 911/Ambulance department. They will pay for me to get my EMT certification and I hope I can bring some new ideas to the table to help other parents get better help during what must be one of the most anxiety producing time of their lives.
I also want to be able to help my friend who is fighting for her life from breast cancer that has now spread to her brain with 4 masses surrounding her brain. She is getting weaker and weaker by the day. I spend a lot of time with her so if I can learn something, anything to do to help her I will be happy.
