LauraFirst of all I want to make a correction to Jill H’s comments. I take no offense to this because I know Jill and I know she meant no harm. So I just wanted to correct some wording to her post. In Jill’s post she said that she "thought girls with CAH didn’t have big penises but rather smallish ones......" The correction to this is that CAH girls do not have penises at all. These are enlarged clitorises. I just wanted to clarify that in case someone new to this isn’t put out of their minds with thinking their girl has a penis.
For other comments, some girls are virilized at birth more than others. Some may not even be that virilized to the point CAH gets looked over. Some girls are so virilized that they do appear to look like boys. So it is truly hard to determine the sex of a child through a simple sonogram. I am not 100 percent sure on this but I imagine if they knew the history of the family with CAH, then they could go further with an exam of the genitals via some kind of sonogram that is more technical. Don’t ask me, I am no doctor. But I would never trust a sonogram to assign a sex. Ever. Even with CAH. I would trust a CVS or some other test to determine the sex of an unborn child.
