Thanks Amy, Jen, and Kathy!
Yes...I am excited to tell you all that there is a new book out on CAH. It is a collaborative effort between me--the parent of a child with CAH--and my son’s Pediatric Endocrinologist, Dr. Scott Rivkees of Yale University. The book is called Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia: A Parents’ Guide. It is a 6 x 9 paperback, and contains 11 chapters, an appendix, glossary, and extensive list of references. The whole thing is about 300 pages.
Each of the chapters addresses a different topic to do with CAH--genetics, diagnosis, glucocorticoid treatment, mineralocorticoid treatment, prenatal treatment, etc. At the end of each chapter, we address many frequently asked questions.
There are also introductory pieces by Dr. Rivkees and myself--written from the doctor’s and patient’s viewpoints, respectively--as well as a Foreword by Dr. Jack Crawford, the former head of Peds Endo at Mass General Hospital in Boston and an Emeritus Professor at Harvard Medical School. Sadly, Dr. Crawford passed away, while the book was in production. He was a great friend and mentor of Dr. Rivkees and was very helpful in reviewing an earlier draft of the book. I am sorry he was not able to see the finished product.
As Jen mentioned, the book is now available and can be ordered from the publisher’s website at http://www.authorhouse.com/BookStore/ItemDetail.aspx?bookid=27871 . I must tell you, however, that we have not yet seen a preview copy (it is supposed to arrive any day now!), so--hopefully--there have been no errors during production.
As a parent myself, I know how difficult it was to find comprehensive, understandable information on CAH, when my son was first diagnosed. Like most of you, I searched the public libraries and bookstores first, and came up with nothing.
This book is an attempt at filling that large gap. It has taken a long time to put together and has been a lot of hard work, but--for me--it has been a labor of love. We hope it will be helpful to all of you!
