Carol M.Hi Lisa,
I am glad you found the book helpful and am sorry for all the problems with your daughter. However, please do not miscontrue what we written. Yes, because of its long duration of action, dex is TYPICALLY given once a day. However, that is not to say that it is NEVER prescribed twice daily. In some situations, dex may in fact be given more than once a day.
Also the range of doses that we give are examples of TYPICAL doses. Some children might require a little more, others a little less. But, it would be a mistake to think that we are saying is that no one should EVER get more than 0.3 mg/day---it really depends on how big the child is and what seems to work for him/her.
With that said, it does sound like your daughter may be getting too much medication. A total dose of 1.2 mg/day is pretty high, compared to other kids her age. However, from previous posts you have made, I am pretty certain that you have indicated that your daughter was getting a much lower dose....also that she is taking the liquid dex. It can be easy to mix up ml’s and mg’s---they are not the same thing. So, one of the things you may want to speak to the endo about is making sure she is getting the amount that is prescribed.
If you want, feel free to email me off the board and I will see if that might be part of the problem here. cyhsu@optonline.net
