LeannaI really appreciate everyones opinion on this. I have 3 nieces who attended our local public school. One had to be moved to a school 20 miles away since she was persecuted for being a larger girl and this was not just from the children it was from the teachers! I have actually looked into all the schools in our area since we have school of choice in this state. I can’t find one that is confident with medications or injections. And to be frank our local hospital is not even close to prepared when it comes to CAH. I have already had 3 trips to the ER with my son (who is only 21 months old) and if it wasn’t for the Emergency letter I printed from this site and, had my Endo fill out, my son would not be here now. He had a very bad stomach bug this winter and was limp to almost the point of no return when after pleading to the ER docs to help him, I handed the letter I finally remembered I had. I have never in my life seen nurses and doctors hop so fast. No one in our area has even heard of CAH and no one seems to care if his condition can be life threatening. I have learned that I am my sons only true protector and I am a lot more protective than I am comfortable being. I think I am too protective. To the point of being afraid ALL the time for him. I am not comfortable being this way.
As far as germs are concerned. If I was concerned about germs I would be in BIG trouble since my son has to have his blood drawn at a very large hospital 60 miles away and his endo is in the same office as a family practice. So far almost every illness my son has come in contact with (which has been at least 10 so far) was from a doctor’s office or hospital and the one that almost killed him and put him in the only pediatric hospital in the lower state area for 3 days was from a holder for his blood test!!! She was complaining of a stomach ache while she was holding him with no gloves!!! I was so mad I threatened not to take him in for blood draws when the endo came in (at the hospital) asking why my son was getting sick all the time. I actually scolded her! I think he has a lot lower chance to get sick from the schools than endo trip. Most people keep their kids home when they are sick, but I can’t keep my son from a doctors office full of sick people, nor can I keep him away from hospital loaded with sick people, nurses and no good policies. This hospital is the only place that can even get my sons blood drawn. No one else can get enough blood out of him.
All the special needs children I know of are either going to a special need school 45 minutes away or are home schooled. I think we will be homeschooling and will find a group that he can be involved with as well as sports. Again I really appreciate everyones opinion on this it really does help to know there are others out there doing the same. His CAH will never run his life he is WAY to "independent thinking" to let it!
