re: Asthma

YES. My daughter that has SWCAH, was diagnosed with mild to moderate asthma when she was in kindergarten. She got this bad respiratory virus that the ped. called it a form of RSV. Even though only infants can get RSV, she says there is a respiratory virus out there that is like it. My daughter was coughing and coughing, with a fever one night. Finally got her settled, and I was watching her breathe at 5 am when I noticed her ribs were showing every time she took a breath in. I knew something was not right. Her breathing was labored. Her fever was sky high. We got her up and out to the E.R. within minutes. They said to me, "Oh she is asthmatic." And I said, Nooo, she doesn’t have asthma. And then they lifted her shirt and said, "See how her ribs show when she breathes. THAT is being asthmatic." So she was admitted for a couple of days for this nasty virus. They put her on oxygen, and high steriods, and many breathing treatments. UGH. It was hell. She was bannannas! The steriods made her a maniac by day two. BUT it all helped. Then they sent us home with a nebulizer machine. I was like, what is this crap for? I thought they were crazy for sending it home with us. BUT, sure enough like they said, the next cold was hard on her. She was wheezing every time. Back to the doctor we would go, they would check her pulse OX and sure enough, low. They would give her a breathing treatment and send us home again. Finally after the secopnd or third visit, they recommended us see a respiratory clinic at Children’s Hospital. There they diagnosed her with mild to moderate asthma. Today she is fine. She is on a maintanence plan that includes inhaled steriods. I swear to it that there is some change in her levels but the endo. and the asthma doc. didn’t think it would occur. I DO. So keep your eyes on that. Email me with any quesitons. I am at dlmack1@softhome.net. It is scary at first, but like with CAH, the more you get to know about it, the better you will feel about dealing with it. To be honest, I cried when they told me. I didn’t think anything else could go wrong after being diagnosed with CAH for God sakes. But it does and we got through it fine. Email me, I am here if you need anything. I will send up a prayer as soon as I close here. If your child is still struggling to breathe, go to the E.R. after calling your doc. Don’t mess around with it. Let me know how you guys are doing. God bless.
